Chris parked nearly a block away from Stanzioneâs place. He turned off the engine and it was suddenly very quiet. âWell,â he said unnecessarily. âI guess this is it.â
Kathryn was sitting alone in the backseat of the stolen Renault, smoking one more in an endless chain of cigarettes. âMichael is going to be so totally pissed,â she said.
âAnd you think thatâs funny?â Chris asked.
âSure I do. In a way. That bastard thinks he owns the world and everybody in it. This will teach him a lesson.â
âRight,â Chris said. Under other circumstances, he might have found such innocenceâor was it stupidity?âtouching. Or sad. As it was, he just got impatient. It was his experience that men like this Stanzione didnât learn their lessons. They mostly just got even.
Dwight, who had been sitting back with his eyes closed since theyâd left Venice, spoke finally. âWhen I was a kid, there was a dog that lived at juvie hall. Big fucker that looked more like a wolf than a dog. But he was okay. As long as you played his games. The thing you didnât want to do was cross him. Because that made him mad. If you were stupid enough to piss that dog off, he turned into a fucking beast.â
âSo?â Kathryn said. âWhatâs that got to do with anything, Iâd like to know.â
Dwight only shrugged.
âGod,â she said helplessly.
Chris was glad when they both shut up. He could feel a familiar tension rising inside his chest, a feeling he always had before a big job. It had been a long time since heâd felt this way, though; the shitty little jobs theyâd been pulling didnât feel the same. The difference, he thought, was a little like jacking off compared to a really good fuck. A difference of degree.
But no job had ever been as big or as important as this one. Chris knew, perhaps instinctively, that what happened tonight was going to determine how the rest of his life went. He didnât know if either Dwight or Kathryn really understood what was happening here.
Probably not. Kathryn was off on her own trip, which was partly lust for the money and partly revenge for whatever Stanzione had done to her. And Dwight ⦠well, Dwight was full of dreams of Aztec gold and pirate treasure, as well as still fighting against the nightmares of the past. That didnât leave a whole lot of room for anything else in his mind.
All in all, this wasnât exactly the greatest collection of criminal minds since the Barker gang. But it didnât have to be. All they had to do was hang together a little bit longer.
They just had to keep cool for a little while and do this job. Then it would be over.
Chris opened the car door. âCome on, people,â he said briskly. âLetâs fucking do it.â
Kathryn giggled as she slid out.
Dwight just got out and closed the door quietly.
The two men lingered in the shadows as Kathryn approached the gate and spoke to the man inside.
